Has it really been 8 years? It seem so vivid still in my mind. September 11, 2001 was a memorable day to many. Where were you? Do you remember the feeling?
I, Becky Pickett, was in the Boston Hilton located across from the Boston Logan Airport. I was there leading a group meeting. All of a sudden, cell phones started ringing, people started getting up and walking out of the room. Then one of the group leaders had the hotel put CNN on the big screen - that was about the time the second plane hit the tower. There was a complete feeling of numbness. Could this really be happening? Could it possibly be a terror attack? As the day unfolded, we couldn't help but notice a stillness in the air. After canceling the meetings, we all begin trying to figure out what to do next. I remember just wanting to talk to my husband and Mom who had my beautiful little girls. The phone lines were jammed, so the wait seemed endless. A large group of us huddled outside the conference room, held hands, and prayed.
Then we heard that all air traffic had been stopped. Stopping air traffic in the US? Now, how were we getting home? My hotel room became a central location for my friends and coworkers. It overlooked one large section of the airport. We watched as police and bomb dogs searched each plane and closed and secured each jetway. I just remember feeling so helpless and just wanted to "go home". Finally, a signal on my cell phone. I got my husband who was in tears trying to find me. I told him we were OK and I was going to get home some way, some how very soon.
The hotel later that afternoon turned in to a disaster location. Chaplains, Red Cross, police, transportation authorities began welcoming family members who had suffered losses in.
We finally were able to secure a car from Hertz (thank you Gold membership!) for the following morning. Three of us began the drive home the following morning.
I could go on and on but I will never forget that day. Boy, there really is no place like home!!!
Thanks to all the men and women who serve to protect our great land everyday. God Bless the USA! May we always remember.
